Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH)

Have you heard about this term or has a dentist ever told you that your child has MIH?

We know that the name is long and may seem complex, but don’t be alarmed: in this section, we will tell you all the information you need to know about MIH.

What is MIH?

It is a defect in the formation of the enamel, which is the harder structure of the tooth.

Which teeth may affect by MIH?

MIH can affect the first permanent molars (back teeth) and also the incisors (front teeth). We usually notice its presence at around 6 years of age, as it is at this age that these permanent teeth begin to appear in the child’s mouth and this change is evident.

You can see MIH as a stain on the tooth, in different colors, which can be white, yellow or even brown.

These stains can still fracture, leaving the tooth more fragile, which can also facilitate the development of caries. In addition, some patients may experience sensitivity in these teeth when eating or during brushing, making oral hygiene difficult.

Why does my child have MIH?

You must be asking yourself, “Why does my child have MIH?” and we would like to have that answer, but it is not yet possible to establish its cause. So far, research shows that MIH does not have a single cause, but rather a combination of factors, such as genetics, systemic or environmental problems. What we do know is that MIH happens during the period when the enamel is forming, more specifically at the time when it would become the hardest structure of the tooth and, for reasons still unknown, the enamel formed becomes more fragile.

Does MIH have treatment?

The treatment of MIH must be based on its correct diagnosis, which, if performed early, will allow a greater preservation of the affected tooth. In addition, referral and follow-up with the pediatric dentist is always desirable, so that the professional can develop treatment strategies according to each case.

In order to guide the parents of patients who have MIH, we have provided below some downloadable brochures, which can be consulted and disclosed whenever they want.
